Iconos Sacros Handcrafted iconography

Central Anatolia, Turkey

Cappadocia

What is there today

In the Göreme valley there are more than three hundred churches carved into volcanic rock, many with their frescoes intact because the stone protected them from light and damp. Underground there are entire cities of up to eight levels where Christians sheltered during raids.

Why this image comes from here

George was a Roman army officer born here, and from here his cult travelled to Lydda and then across the Mediterranean. He is one of the few saints venerated at once by the Catholic, Orthodox and Coptic churches, which is why his icon appears in traditions that share almost nothing else.

Saint George and the Dragon
George was a Roman officer from Cappadocia, and his cult travelled from there to Lydda and then across the Mediterranean. He is patron of Catalonia, Aragon, Georgia, England and Moscow at once.
