Western devotion does not follow the Byzantine canon and does not claim to. Here the image seeks the recognisable face and gesture, and many of these devotions have a precise birth date: the Sacred Heart is born in a Burgundian convent in 1673, the Immaculate Heart takes shape in Portugal in 1917. These are images people recognise instantly and give at marked moments.

How to recognise it

The face is recognisable and human. There is no convention of large eyes and small mouth.
The attribute identifies: a heart, a sword, a palm, a dish, a crucifix. It says who this is without reading a word.
Light comes from a definite place and there are shadows. In a Byzantine icon there are none.
It hangs where life happens: living room, bedroom, parish office, waiting room.

First communion, confirmation, weddings, ordination and mourning. It is also what parishes and confraternities buy.
