A sacred image is not invented. It is copied from another, which was copied from another, back to a real place where someone painted it for the first time.
The pilgrimage
Scroll slowly. You are about to travel through six places.
- Monte Sinaí Christ Pantocrator The oldest surviving Pantocrator has been at the monastery of Saint Catherine, at the foot of Sinai, for fourteen hundred years. It survived the war on images because it was too far away for anyone to reach it.
- Vladímir Virgin of Tenderness This gesture has its own name in the Christian East and one panel that fixed it for good: the one that travelled from Constantinople to Vladimir in the twelfth century and that the whole of Russia took as its own.
- Capadocia Saint George and the Dragon George was a Roman officer from Cappadocia, and his cult travelled from there to Lydda and then across the Mediterranean. He is patron of Catalonia, Aragon, Georgia, England and Moscow at once.
- Nazaret The Annunciation The house where it happened lies under the basilica of Nazareth, and you can still go down to it. The icon does not depict a past moment: it sets it in front of you again.
- Jerusalén Our Lady of Sorrows This is the mother at the foot of the cross, on Golgotha, which today lies inside the Holy Sepulchre itself and is reached by a narrow stone stair.
- Asís Saint Francis of Assisi Assisi sits on an Umbrian hillside and can be seen whole from the plain. The son of a cloth merchant stripped in its square to give his father back his clothes, and everything else follows from that.
The icon screen
Five pieces that explain the rest.
In an eastern church icons are not hung at random: they are set in tiers on a screen that separates the nave from the altar. This is the first tier.
