The journey
George was a Roman officer from Cappadocia, and his cult travelled from there to Lydda and then across the Mediterranean. He is patron of Catalonia, Aragon, Georgia, England and Moscow at once.
How to read it
The lance does not come down with force: it goes in straight and effortless, held in one hand. The saint does not even look at the dragon, because the fight is already settled.
When it is given
Name day, and a gift for a new home or an office. It is an icon of protection, not decoration.
