Orthodox icons
In an Orthodox home an icon is not an ornament hung wherever it looks good. There is a corner, usually facing east, where the family icons are placed, and that corner is used daily. That is why an icon given at a baptism or a wedding is not put away: it goes there and stays for decades.
How to recognise it
- The name saint governs. A child is given a saint s name and that feast can matter more than a birthday. The gift that lands is that saint s icon.
- The image is flat and on panel. A free standing carving is a western object and looks out of place here.
- If you do not know the name, the Virgin of Tenderness and the Pantocrator work in any home.
- Inscriptions are spotted instantly. A piece with no letters, or invented ones, exposes whoever gave it.
