The journey
It is the oldest surviving Christian image, painted in the catacombs of Priscilla when Christ could not yet be shown openly. A shepherd with a lamb on his shoulders raised no suspicion.
How to read it
The lamb is not across the shoulders as in the Roman versions: it is held in front, against the chest, with both hands. That change turns a rescue into an embrace.
